3 Sandburg Students Serve as Honorary Pages in Illinois House of Representatives

Three Carl Sandburg College students served as honorary pages in the Illinois House of Representatives on May 30 as guests of Rep. Dan Swanson.

Desire Matthews, Elijah Stewart and Christopher Lopez were nominated by Sandburg coordinator of diversity Anthony Law to serve as honorary pages and also met with Swanson on May 6 at Sandburg.

Matthews, who is studying toward a degree in psychology, is president of the Black Student Association, a member of Women of Character and has been on the honors list. She also volunteers in Galesburg schools and is a mentor to area students.

Stewart, who plans to be an orthopedic surgeon, is vice president of the Black Student Association, a student ambassador, a member of Men of Distinction, is involved in TRIO Student Support Services and has been on the honors list.

Lopez is studying toward his Associate in Arts degree from Sandburg. He is a member of Men of Distinction and earned the club’s Spirit Award for 2018-19. He also serves as a reading buddy at Gale Elementary School in Galesburg.
